Texas Instruments nSpire calculator
by: tomJust bought a TI nSpire calculator, needed for some maths classes I'm attending, and have been playing with it for a few hours. First impressions: Great clear and detailed screen. Logical and easy to use. It is somewhat bulky, and the high number of buttons makes it easy to make mistakes. At least if you use your thumb. But so far I like it. Will write more later.

Bif Naked
by: tomMusic has always been important to me, and I used to spend hours every week searching for new artists in record stores and reading NME. Never understood how some people were content buying albums from the same few artists for decades. I mean: there's so much great music out there that never reaches any hit list, so why not explore it? It takes too much time for most people to do so between work, kids and spouse I guess. Different people prioritizes time differently, and even I don't use as much time searching for music any more. Sometimes I'm lucky and stumble upon artists that I like, and one such artist is Bif Naked.

Iran Election and the "Internal Affairs" argument
by: tomThe Iranian government claims foreign powers meddle in their internal affairs. Sorry, but there is no such excuse for their actions following the election. The "internal affairs" argument does not apply in a situation wherein basic human rights are violated. When human rights are violated, it actually is everybody's business. Of course they don't see it that way. I don't expect them to view themselves as crooks and abusers of human rights. They probably recognize human rights as a western invention with no relevance to themselves. Their election fraud is easily justified by claiming that the opposition would possibly make Iran open to western ideas, moving away from their god.

Partitioning
by: tomIt came as a surprise to me to read that gnu parted should not be used to anything that involves file systems. This means among other things that resizing file systems using parted is not recommended. In ubuntu intrepid warnings about this is found under "Known Issues" in the manual for parted, but not in the info pages.
KNOWN ISSUES ext3 filesystem resizing does not currently work, please use resize2fs(8) instead. Resizing partitions with an ext3 filesystem will not generally work because of the above issue. Use resize2fs(8) to resize the filesystem and resize the partition manually using fdisk(8) or a similar tool. For LVM situations, you will need to use the LVM commands to resize the LVM elements. The reason why
ext3 filesystem resizing does not currently workis found in parted's development mailing list. From parted-devel:
As long as the bit-rotten ext* code remains, using Parted to manipulate file systems is like playing russian roulette. The least we can do is to warn users of the risk. The main reason I've been using parted is the convenience of a utility that can change the file system and partition. Now I'm left with fdisk.
